AMOC | September 2007

AMOC Meeting, Donnington Park, Sunday 30th September

The last AMOC meeting of the season and a very slim chance to win the classic section of the Championship.  However in reality I needed to finish 5 places ahead of Charlie Kemp - which was most unlikely unless he failed to finish.

Qualifying for the UBS AMOC Championship race was the first qualifying session of the day and the track was quite slippery.  At the end of qualifying Charlie was 5th and I was 6th, not what either of us had hoped for.

The Race
On the front row were Darren McWhirter's Zegato replica and Michael Malloch in a very new 2007 V8 N24.  On the second row Pete Foster and Nicholas King both hard to overtake.  As the opening laps unfolded Malloch led McWhirter with King behind in 3rd, then Pete Foster, Charlie and I battled it out for 4th place.

All too soon the 15 minute race drew to a conclusion.  I managed to get the 4th slot just ahead of Pete Foster with Charlie Kemp in 6th.  So after 7 races Charlie retained his title by just 30 points (or 3 places).

All the races have been very close with some great and and exciting sport for the spectators.

Qualifying
This went better with pole position in 1.20.531 just ahead of Nic King and Thornton Mustard.

The Race
A rolling start, but a little too late on the brakes at the first corner and Nic King snuck inside to take the lead.  Several laps in hot pursuit and the only chance to regain the lead appeared to be under braking at the end of the back straight.

After several laps I got half way alongside Nic on the inside line but as we turned onto the bend we touched and unfortunately Nic spun, but he continued.  A couple of laps later the race was red flagged as another car was off the track in a dodgy position.

A few minutes elapsed before the restart.  On the restart I had, who else, Charlie Kemp all over my back bumper and unbelievably I managed to outbrake myself going into the last corner before the pit straight - again - and spun!  I sat there as the whole field trooped past so that was that - race over!

And so ended the AMOC season.
