3rd October @ Oulton Park | October 2009
A long drive up to Cheshire and after the disappointment of Spa I was hoping for a better weekend to continue the good results already achieved at AMOC meetings. Boisie had very kindly lent me the old car as the engine from Spa was still hors de combat.
An early start with signing in at 7.00 a.m.! Forecast was showers. 3 races entered, Classic Championship - Intermarque and an all comers race. Qualifying went OK for all 3 with satisfactory results = 1 pole, 2 seconds and in the all comers race the quickest lap I have done here in 1.53.059.
Race 1 - AMOC Classic Championship
Although 3 lightweights (that's DB4s not drivers like Robert Rawe!) fell by wayside before the race the competition, particularly in the form of Darren McWhirters lovely Zagato replica, was going to be fierce.
As the lights went out the very light Zagato pulled ahead, a re-run of last year. I tucked in behind Darren and pushed as hard as I could. Through the twisty bits he had the advantage but on the longer bits I had a bit more ultimate power - it all made it very close and very equal over each lap. By lap 6 Darren's tyres were going off a bit and the rear of his car was beginning to move about a bit more. On lap 6 or 7 I managed to get alongside him on lakeside and slip into the lead which I held to the flag.
A very pleasing 5th win out of 5 AMOC Classic Championship rounds to secure the Classic title with maximum points. Now I must wait until Silverstone in 2 weeks to see if any historic section drivers equal or beat my score for the overall championship.
Intermarque
Having won the previous 6 Intermarque races this year I knew I would have a challenge on this track with both Jackie Cochrane and Robin North, both in fast and powerful cars. And so it came to pass on a damp track. I was third at the end of the first lap and had to work very hard to pass Robin's wide and powerful Mustang to get the second step on the podium.
All Comers
Again second on the grid but too much wheel spin and I was again behind Jackie, Wayne Marr's Ferrari (on slicks) and Robin North. The sun was now out but setting and down into cascades I could hardly see where I was going!
After a few laps I got past Robin for 3rd place but he re-passed me so I had to do it all again which I did with 2 laps to go but then on the last lap a fuel stutter developed and Robin got me again. I had a final go to pass him as the flag fell, failing by just 0.086 of a second, that's about 12"!!!
So a very competitive 3 races ended with a bit of disappointment not to get 3rd place but a 1st, 2nd and 4th wasn't so bad.
