Masters Festival Brands Hatch | May 2010
On the Saturday it was a Top Hat Day. I was out in Mike Wilkinson's E Type in the Cloth Cap race with his son Michael and then on my own in the MK2 Jaguar in the Top Hat race.
The first time in Mikes E Type and a bit uncomfortable to say the least! However we had a pretty good race from 8th on the grid. I went first and had a dry run but Michael had rain to deal with. Despite this we managed to finish 3rd in class and 4th overall.
In the Top Hat race we were trying new stiffer suspension. It was OK in the dry but in the wet impossible and after an excursion at clearways from which I could recover it had me off at paddock hill - and there it stayed!
Sunday saw qualifying for the Broadspeed and the MK2 for Monday's races. John Bussell was joining me in the Mk2 and on Monday in Mike's E Type for the 2 hour Gents Drivers race.
In the Broadspeed I managed 3rd in class. In the MK2 John declared it un-driveable (which made me feel better!) and the chaps made adjustments, which certainly helped its handling but not its performance - just too heavy or underpowered against the opposition, but it does look good!
Monday - Race Day
Race 1 - the Inter series with Group 2 touring cars in their race and can am cars in their race - but all on track together - not ideal. A good start in the Broadspeed but after just 1.5 laps it cut out and I parked on the grass to watch everyone else. The race was red flagged early for a bad crash at paddock.
Race 2 - next was the touring cars over 3 litres. We were in our own class so off I went and ran OK for the first half, before handing over to John. He went out but pitted after a few laps with a fuel leak.
2 races and 2 failures - not good.
Race 3 - the next race was the second Interseries race. I had to start from the back of the grid, but soon moved through the field to find myself pegged behind John Young's batmobile. The fastest man - Sean Lynn in his Capri - stopped early so we recorded 2nd place.
Race 4 - the last race was the Gents Driver 2 Hour. I went first, starting from 13th out of 35. A couple of laps later and I was down to 17th or 18th but I settled into the routine and got more used to the car. After a long battle I managed to get past and away from Whales Mustang and after an hour pitted in 9th place for John to take over. He battled hard - against some very quick cars and at the end without top gear to get us up to 7th place. A creditable result.
