23rd/24th/25th May @ Brands Hatch | May 2009

2 races, both in the E Type.  Firstly a Cloth Cap 45 minute race on the Indy (short) circuit and then a 2 hour 2 driver Gentleman Driver race with Charlie Kemp on the GP circuit.

Race 1 - Cloth Cap

Qualifying = fast and furious with 78 cars on the short circuit.  It was more like a race!

The Race

A standing start from 3rd was fine, but I got jumped by Peter Thompson's Marcos and whilst I was finding a way past him the leading 2 cars, Bizzarrini and Lotus, now joined by a mended Jamie Boot TVR, were pulling away.

Once I got past the Marcos I pulled away from him but couldn't make much impression on the leading cars.  The Bizzarrini had a drive train failure which elevated me to third with a while to go.  The safety car was called into action with 10 minutes to go and so I thought I would have a chance to go for second, but regretably the race was stopped early.  Jamie Boot then told me he probably wouldn't have finished the full length race.  However a podium and 3rd was OK.

Qualifying: 3rd in 57.460 (75.09mph)

Race result: 3rd (2nd in class) in 35.23.954 (69.07mph)

Best lap: 58.223

Race 2 - Gentleman Drivers

Qualifying - 42 cars meant qualifying was hectic.  Again much to my irritation Charlie was the quickest of the 2 of us.  But he is a lot younger and obviously rather good as he keeps getting wins in his Hola.  However even his skill can't make up for the lack of grunt in the E Type.

The Race

I went first and held our starting 9th place.  The first 35 minutes were spent stuck behind the Bizzarrini, which was not as quick as it usually is.  I could catch up to it on the bendy bits but on the straight power told.  A very nasty accident for an Elan at Paddock Hill brought the race to a stop with us in 8th place.  After the re-start I got past the Bizzarrini and had a handful of goodish laps before the compulsory pit stop.  Charlie took over as rain threatened but stayed away.  He lapped consistently and maintained 7th place in an uneventful stint.  We could not match his qualifying time.  Again a 7th in this company was not a bad result.

Qualifying: 9th in 1.49.828 (75.41mph)

Race (restart): 7th in 50.53.788 (67.81mph)

Best lap (by Charlie): 1.52.307, my best lap: 1.52.407
