Cloth Cap | May 2007
Back to Silverstone, this time on the historic grand prix circuit, a real treat, for the Top Hat Event. The day dawned nice and sunny, although it was soon to cloud over, but it did stay dry.
Race 1, Cloth Cap
Qualifying was not long enough for really learning the track, but my biggest problem was a massive shudder through the steering column under breaking. It would have been impossible to drive like that for the whole of the 45 minute race. I think I qualified about 12th, but as the timing equipment failed no ones times were recorded, much to the embarassment of the Cloth Cap/Masters folk and of course the Silverstone people.
We all went to the assembly area, then sent to the grid in the order we had arrived at assembly. Once on the grid the poor stewards tried to arrange us all to some grid none of the drivers had seen!! All very interesting.
Eventually the race started 30 minutes late.
I got a reasonable start and settled down to chase those in front of me. It was a 45 minute race with a mandatory pit stop between 15 and 30 minutes. The circuit is fast and challenging and I was pleased that Kevin and Paul had found time to change the front discs which meant I could brake without the steering wheel being shaken out of my hands.
All too soon the race was over having been fairly uneventful until towards the end when I was slowly catching up the leading E Type, when I got held up by 2 backmarkers which meant the closing gap opened up again.
