Castle Coombe - Monday 30th August 2010 | August 2010

Just one race, an AMOC Intermarque.

Qualifying was OK, after 10 minutes I was second behind John Wilson's MGB hotrod which was in the invitation (non points scoring class).  Then a Ferrari caught fire which meant yellow flags - there didn't seem to be any time left so I pitted but then the flags went in and others managed one more quick lap, the result of which I started fifth on the grid.

The Race

A rolling start, all OK with a position gained as we approached quarry, the first corner.  Gerry Bailey in his N24 was second and left his braking too late, as he did at Brands in the previous round.  He was on the inside, right hand side of the track.  Tim Mugeridge in his Ferrari was just behind Gerry in the centre of the track and as we began to exit quarry I moved to the outside to pass Tom.

Bailey then lost the back end of his car, but kept the power down prompting a big spin back across the track.  This caused Tom to swerve left, he connected with my front knocking me so I was heading for the grass.  With nowhere to go I braked hard but on the grass to no avail and hit the tyre wall very hard (at about 80mph).  The first impact was left front corner and left side, the car then thought about rolling over sideways before beginning to climb the tyre wall and frighten the marshalls!

I struggled out of the passenger door (mine wouldn't open) and was immediately taken control of by the excellent medics.  A few hours later I left Swindon hospital with some broken ribs and a lot of bruises whilst a somewhat bruised Aston headed back to Norfolk.  A shame because it would have been a good tussle for the win.
