Heritage 16th - 17th August at Silverstone | August 2008

Despite some disappointments that have cost a handful of race wins, the racing recently has been so fast and furious and such fun.  After the Heritage race and all its weird after effects I didn't imagine this trip to Silverstone could produce better racing - but it did.

Qualifying was on Saturday morning.  We were in the middle (National) circuit, not one that I know well.  No incidents and a chance to get to know the track.

Race 1

A rolling start from 6th place on the grid.  On lap 2 I got past Hammonds very wide Camaro and Jackie Cochranes Tiger coming out of Copse and set off after Jenkinsons highly modified Aston V8.  Things got very exciting with some hard manoeuvering by Andy.  The pit wall looks very solid when you get too close to it going flat out down the pit straight!

Despite a couple of times getting in front of him he always returned the compliment and so I ended the race in 3rd, behind Andy and Ollie Bryant in 1st place.

Race 2

This time starting from 3rd, a hectic start but out of Copse it was Jenkinson first with me right behind him.  I was so close I couldn't see the apex of the corners, I just had to follow his rear and hope he was in the right place.  At times we crossed the line just 0.1 seconds apart!!  On lap 5 I got past him, then on lap 8 he re-took the lead which I regained on lap 11.

By this time Cochranes Tiger running 3rd and Bryants Morgan running 4th and the Thurtles Camaro running 5th all began their pit stops.  I went in for my stop (and 2 times around the car run being one driver) on lap 14.

As the picture became clearer, but still at a frantic pace, Colbert in the Tiger led John Young in the other V8 with me in 3rd.  Ollie Bryant in the Morgan was now on my tail and after a couple of passing manoeuvres by each of us I mucked it up by spinning at Becketts.  That let Ollie and Boysie Thurtle past.  I was still in touch but annoyed and in 5th place.   On lap 23 Jenkinsons V8 lost a wheel so up to 4th but not close enough to do anything about Boysie.  The last act was to lap Nicholas King, then spin (tyres must have been a bit hot!) and let him pass then to re-pass him.  With 28 laps completed the race was over and a very enjoyable 4th place achieved.  Only 5 cars finished on the same lap and my best time was also very pleasing.
